Burney J. Le Boeuf is Professor Emeritus of Biology at UC Santa Cruz. With a background in Reproductive Endocrinology, Ecology, and Behavioral Biology, he’s been a leader in research on marine mammals for over three decades, known especially for ground-breaking studies of social behavior, pioneering studies of the diving behavior, physiology and migrations of seals, using attached microcomputer, time-depth recorders and satellite tags and more. Le Boeuf has published widely on a number of subjects (over 180 scientific journal articles and three books) and consulted on topics as diverse as the status of the gray whale population and effects of DDT on birds and mammals. He served as Vice Chancellor and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Santa Cruz for several years, and is currently Director of the Aligned Research Program at the University Affiliated Research Center, a program that makes awards to UC faculty for research aligned with the NASA Ames mission.
